| The diameters of treenails, also called trunels range
from 1.0 to 1.25 inches with no tightening wedges observed to date.
Many of the outboard ends of the treenails exhibited tool marks
possibly rendered by blunt-ended chisels used to additionally seat
the fasteners after the excess end had been trimmed off. Several
treenail samples taken for botanical analysis all revealed Quercus
sp. or white oak. Only few iron spikes have survived, but those
associated with hull construction averaged 1/2 inch in section. |
