The diameters of treenails, also called trunels range from 1.0 to 1.25 inches with no tightening wedges observed to date. Many of the outboard ends of the treenails exhibited tool marks possibly rendered by blunt-ended chisels used to additionally seat the fasteners after the excess end had been trimmed off. Several treenail samples taken for botanical analysis all revealed Quercus sp. or white oak. Only few iron spikes have survived, but those associated with hull construction averaged 1/2 inch in section.
