The classification of Tools and Instruments equates to activities that took place on any armed, wooden sailing vessel. These groups reflect a wide range of behavior aboard the ship and include: carpentry (gouge and jack); gunnery (gunner rule); medicinal (apothecary jar, scale weight, syringe); navigation (divider, sector, slate); restraining device (shackle); sail maker/rigger (hook, needle); sharpen (grindstone, whetstone); survey (chain tag, sight, mount); and artifacts of unknown function (tube, wire, block).
