Wooden tompions, generally made of a soft wood such as pine, were placed in the muzzle to keep water out of the bore of the gun, thus allowing the piece to remain loaded without the gunpowder becoming ruined. Tompions usually had a string attached that connected it to a tarred ball of cordage for further protection.
