The 2 inch caliber gun (C19) was loaded with, in addition
to a powder cartridge and wads, a 1.81inch diameter cast iron ball and
three wrought iron bolts bundled together to form a roughly cylindrical
projectile about 8 inches in length. The 18th century term for ammunition
formed of bundled bolts was "langrage." Falconer's Marine
Dictionary (1780:171) states: |
