For additional protection, lead sheets, known as cannon aprons, covered the breech of the cannon's touchhole. Aprons were often clipped on one end to make a tighter fit around the tapering cannon barrel. Holes were punched on either side of the apron with which to tie a lanyard and thus secure the apron to the cannon barrel.
