Twenty-two samples of coal and eight samples of clinkers have been recovered from the wreck site. Although there has not yet been any systematic investigation of the coal, preliminary examination suggests that it is bituminous rank. There are no data at the present time to indicate whether the coal is from the original wreck, and used for cooking or heating, or whether it is intrusive. Beaufort was a major fueling station for naval steamships during the Civil War.
