The type of cannon shot utilized during navel action was dependent on the type of attack and ultimate goal. Solid shot was used to pierce the sides of a wooden hull ship, while bar shot would have disabled sails and rigging. Lead shot and other small pieces of iron, lead, or glass, were often bagged in canvas and directed at the enemy crew. Langrage would have had an effect on the ship's and sailors.
