Archaeologists are aware that sites both on land and in the water are seldom sealed from disturbance by natural or man-caused intrusions that subsequently deposit materials unrelated to the original ship and it's wrecking. These intrusive materials represent periods of inlet migration that occurred after the ship was lost when it was exposed and artifacts from other ships or land washed into the site and became trapped there. Other items might derive from fishing, salvage or archaeological activities. A final group are items that occur naturally at the site, such as shells, fish bones, and pebbles, that are simply found in association with the ship's remains.
