| Lead shot produced
in two-part molds range in size from about 6mm to just under 19mm
and are typically found in the same concretions as the drop shot.
Molded shot occur in lesser quantities than drop shot, though they
account for 76% of the recovered lead shot by weight. Buckshot,
less than 8.4mm (.33 inch diameter), make up the largest quantity
of the molded shot, and were intended for multiple shot loads. Bullet
molds were two types. Gang molds were designed for large-scale production
and were typically well made and maintained to insure consistent
and round bullets. Single cavity molds were used by the consumer
and were often supplied with the firearm. As the molds became worn,
they could produce bullets whose halves were offset or leaked, producing
large amounts of flashing and out-of-round bullets. |
