This unique cast brass cockerel finial with a broken mount may have been part of a pipe tamper or similar device. The cockerel was used as a church steeple ornament, representing the Christians’ use as symbol for “Passion Of Christ.” It was also the national symbol of France, formerly known a Gaul, hence “gallus gallus”.
