Survey Procedure: The survey will be conducted from R/V Snapdragon, where gradiometer technicians will record a numerical reading at each sensor location on a laptop computer in Microsoft Excel. Once areas are surveyed, archaeologists will process data and generate magnetic contour maps. These will be integrated into the existing GIS database and compared to other data for further interpretation. Teams of divers, consisting of an archaeologist and an assistant, will conduct the two phases of the gradiometer survey. Diving operations will commence from NC Marine Fisheries Parker. The first will establish and mark survey areas with stakes, lines, and a grid frame. The second team will conduct the survey by moving the sensor to prearranged positions, backing away while the reading is taken, and then moving the sensor to the next position and so on. Survey Schedule: The expedition will be conducted in coordination with DIVELIVE and will take place October 1-3, 2001. In case of bad weather, fieldwork may be rescheduled for October 4-5.
